The second option is to buy the ticket at the pier, but the lines are huge, it is best to buy them in advance and online, http://www.statuecruises.com/  On the official supplier three options are displayed:

1. Buy only the ferry ride to the island, you can walk around, take your photography, visit the souvenir shop and fast food, also allows you to stop at Ellis Island, where there is a museum that recreates an audio-guide about epic lived by emigrants who were taken there and went to a court emigration were they decided if they were accepted to enter the United States or  rejected the whole family and have a brutal return.

2. Buy the trip to Liberty island, including the trip to Ellis island, entrance to the pedestal, is restricted to daily tickets, that’s the main reason to buy tickets in advance. You must climb 215 steps, there's not an elevator.

3. Buy the trip to the island and the entrance to the pedestal and climb to the crown, go prepared to climb 354 steps up through a narrow stairs, you can only come up with your ticket, camera and medication, other objects including wallet and keys must be deposited in a deposit box rental, also including Ellis island, to achieve this, you will need to book in advance, since the quotas are even more restricted.

You must claim your tickets in the ticket office at the park entrance, tickets for access to the interior of the statue as well, this procedure should do by the person who bought the tickets, presenting a valid ID and with the credit card you made a transaction. Tours are self-guided, the tour lasts 5 hours, of course depending on the tour you chose. Security to enter the dock is the same as used in airports, very strict, therefore, refrain from carrying the same items banned by planes. If you carry liquids in glass containers you have to drink before or putting in the trash, no solid food is allowed.

Our advice:

The apartment National Monument and Ellis Island often organizes special exhibitions, programs and tours that you can enjoy on the day of the visit, check with the rangers of Liberty Island and Ellis Island through the available programs or visit: www.nps.gov/stli

The time to visit an island is about two hours and 5 hours for both, after 2 pm you can only go to one of the two islands, because they do not give them time to be in both, schedule your time visit in the morning.
